Masters of the Bazaar: A Master-Post Pt. 1 (updated 12/18/16)
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR LATE-GAME FALLEN LONDON/SILVER TREE CONTENT BELOW THE CUT! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
This is the updated version of my guide to the Masters of the Bazaar! It includes the information on their domain of trade, their personality, where they can be encountered in game, and some quotes highlighting their nature and/or motivations. This list has some pretty heavy spoilers, so read at your own peril. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an ask!
Mr Wines
Domain: All things drinkable, though it can’t be bothered with water. Ladies and Gentlemen of the night. The Vake and its hunters. Currently disputing Mr Spices over the domain of Dreams, particularly in regards to Honey.
Personality: Amiable, jovial, even. One of the few masters known to make jokes and entertain. Known to poorly repay those who fund its revels, does not credit others for accomplishments it benefits from. Loyal to the Bazaar and its collection of stories. Revealed in the “Passion” destiny to truly care for The Bazaar and its mission.
Encountered at: The Carnival (rare success), Revels, The Silver Tree as the Cloaked Emissary, Christmas content (snow-clearing, noman), The Secular Missionary/Cave of the Nadir content, Incarnadine Fur Robe cash-in, player wedding.
Quotes: “We dream rarely. We dream of the cold empty spaces. We dream of the time before love and the time before names. We do not wish to speak further of our dreams.”
“‘There you are! The doughty supplier of Bacchus’ delights! Come, no doubt, to settle the night’s account. Well, we appear to have left our wallet in our other cloak.”
“Other than certain aspects of love, we are unfamiliar with your processes of spawning. And surely wish to remain so.”
“We have a wide variety of emotions, exactly like those of humans. The cellars of our spire are full of them.”
Mr Apples
Domain: Food, immortality, lumber.
Personality: Affectionate, friendly, perhaps a little over-familiar. Enjoys festivities and the company of others. Also trades as Mr Hearts. Allied with Mr Veils, meaning it is possibly allies with Mr Fires.
Encountered at: Mrs. Plenty’s Carnival, a high-stakes game of chance to win a majestic pleasure Yacht, Incarnadine Fur Robe Cash-in
Quotes: “Sweet and delicious creature! I have never been a Master of a City! Merely of the Bazaar! We are not Masters of London. We merely provide advice and guidance to the Empress and the Court of Aldermen and all your other fine institutions! And ensure prosperity.”
”Things change, my dear, things change. Skies close. Cities sink. We all come home to roost”
“Oh, *authority*. Take it from me - and you may write this down if you like - authority is what’s left when the money runs out.”
Mr Spices
Domain: Spices, sweet smokes, Prisoner’s Honey. Disputing Mr Wines for control (or regulation) of dreams.
Personality: Peevish, irritable. Serious, almost to the point of being humorless. Very businesslike. Once friends with Wines.
Encountered in: Two of three possible endings for the Jack-of-Smiles cases, Christmas content (snow-clearing, noman)
Quotes: “I do not play *games*, @Sinning_Jenny ! I am a Master of the Bazaar! It is not a matter for *games*”
” ‘Our agent in Polythreme tells us you were seen at the ironmonger’s workshop. And now your nose is firmly pressed against my Veilgarden businesses. Tsk. Hubristic and regrettable. Most regrettable. What are we to do? You have demonstrated an immoderate appetite for secrets. Gluttonous. So we will give you your fill, and then you will respect our wishes for discretion. Or not. But, well, we both know where that particular road leads.’”
(Said by an Artful Financier about Mr Spices) ’..any idea how difficult it is to put a single figure on a romantic poem? One keeps suggesting a level tax on each one, but that’s not good enough for Mr Spices. Oh no, it wants each scrap of love poetry assessed separately. And who’s going to do that? Me? Do I look like a valuer of sighs? A weigher of artful melancholies?’
Mr Stones
Domain: all manner of stones, from quarry-rock to precious gems, as well as salt and blasting powder.
Personality: Very to-the-point. Materialistic, almost greedy. That being said, it is without a doubt one of the most cunning masters, and is loyal to the mission of the Bazaar. Believes that London’s time as the 5th city has come to a close and is acting to end it, seeking Moon Milk specifically towards this end.
Encountered in: The Affair of the Box (one possible ending), Christmas content (noman), Incarnadine Fur Robe Cash-in.
Quotes: ‘So. Box is opened. Our box. No more. Disappointed. Didn’t need glim. Needed moon-milk. Devils interested. Valuable trade opportunity lost. But. Ingenuity in opening box. Cunning. Perseverance. Admirable. Go now. Discover Fires’ next move. Be rewarded.’
”Decline offer. Dislike wine. Regards.”
”Jasper, Frank. Cures for greed, hoarding, malefaction.”
“Mine.”
“Not mine!”
Mr Fires
Domain: Coal, gas, candles. Dockside trade and dirigibles. Controls, or is at least closely affiliated with the Orphanage.
Personality: Cunning. Strict, does not tolerate interruptions in its business. Confident. Speaks in the first person. Opposed to changing the Bazaar’s location.
Encountered at: The Battle for Wolfstack Docks (aftermath), the end of The Affair of the Box, Christmas content (noman), Incarnadine Fur Robe cash-in
Quotes: ‘Not bad, my little one. I’ll be keeping an eye on you.’
(Said by a Special Constable regarding it) “It’s about the only one that really likes London as a city. Most of the Masters want to get their service over with, but old Fires enjoys the life here. So it interferes with the other lot. It’s thrown a spanner in old Stones’ plan to get some posh devil to turn up with an army. And it’s always messing with the love stories. Wines and Spices do most of that work, and they fair hate its guts. But Fires is subtle enough, and they can’t do much against it in the open.”
Mr Iron
Domain: Tools, engines, weapons, printing-presses. Adjudicator of Knife-and-Candle, including the underground leagues.
Personality: Strict, humorless and silent. Only speaks through written communication. It does not care for the Bazaar, and is actively trying to sabotage its acquisition of stories via the rules of Knife-and-Candle and its discouragement of notable professions/involvement in stories.
Encountered at: Mrs Plenty’s Carnival (failure), An Umpire of Knife-and-Candle (indirectly), Christmas content (noman), Incarnadine fur robe cash-in, The Cave of the Nadir expedition (indirectly), Player Wedding
Quotes: [There is no reason for secrecy. All are brothers in the Bazaar.]
[I do not dicker. Battle scars indicate weapon is in working order. Bloodstains suggest carelessness of previous owner.]
[To the murderous. To the silent. To the keen blade and the wet garrote. To the players. The Bazaar salutes you.]
Mr Cups
Domain: Crockery, Pottery, Sculpture. The frangible and the fine. Certifiable scraps and the Relickers. Also deals as Mr Mirrors, though whether this is an alter ego or a truly different personality (even a separate entity) is up for debate.
Personality: Perhaps the most flirtatious of all the Masters. Claims it wishes to reflect dreams, not rule them. Will fly into a rage at the mention of the Second City.
Encountered at: Christmas content (noman, confirmed Via fate-locked option), Incarnadine Fur Robe Cash-in
Quotes: “Work hard for the enrichment of the Bazaar, and us all. Shun seditionists. Practice courtesy & honesty.”
(in regards to Mr Mirrors) “Consider a mirror. Do your interests overlap with those of your reflection?”
